General Psychology (PSYC 2300) Fall Semester 2020
Writing Assignment: Review of specific topic of research in Psychology (summary review of focus on research)
Write a summary review of a topic of research (based on Thinking Critically feature section) and incorporate recent research literature in the discussion.
Choose one of the following Thinking Critically exercise in the textbook (Bernstein’s Essentials of Psychology. 6th ed./2014, or 7th ed./2018):
4. Are Intelligence Tests Unfairly Biased against Certain Groups?
Ch. 7. Thought, Language, and Intelligence (6th ed.: p. 283 – 285; 7th ed.: p. 275 – 276)
1. Write a review and analysis essay, summarize and present the research and theoretical issues of the topic. In writing this paper, you should first carefully read the particular Thinking Critically section and the relevant part of the chapter. In your own words, write an analytical review and scholarly summary of the topic (major arguments, research studies and findings, theoretical discussion). Do not copy directly from text, and do not present you paper using the format in the textbook (i.e., what am I being asked to believe and accept? Can that evidence be interpreted another way?).
2. In addition, you also need to select and read at least one scholarly, empirical research article on the topic/issue (e.g., recent research on the issue). This can be done by using the Journal databases available through the library website (e.g., Science Direct, EBSCO, ProQuest). Your paper should incorporate aspects of this research (e.g., with a descriptive paragraph). Citation and reference (at the end of the paper) are required.
The paper should be at least 4 pages in length (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font) but not more than 10 pages.
Select a current issue (e.g., universal health care, gun control, the environment, HIV/AIDS prevention and control, overuse of social media, violent video games) in which you have interest. Then, think about which psychological concepts would be relevant to your issue. For example, if you are discussing violent video games, you might be interested in the relationship between exposure to the games and aggression, or you might want to look at how the brain responds to the rewarding feeling of playing the game. If you were discussing the impact of social media, relevant psychological concepts might include addiction, isolation, or depression. Find a scholarly journal article related to the topic. This article should be no more than 5 to 7 years old. Visit the http://www.psychologyandsociety.com/concepts.html web page for a list of some psychological concepts.
With these thoughts in mind:
By Day 3
Post your response to the following:
Briefly describe the issue you selected, and explain why you selected it. Next, explain which psychological concepts are most useful in understanding that issue. Using your selected scholarly article, explain how the psychological concepts were discussed in terms of your chosen issue. Also, describe how the author(s) of the article used psychological concepts to explain, or frame, your selected issue.
Understanding Buyers and Markets
Individuals and firms can (and should) act ethically, but the outcome of their acts may not affect society in general. An ethical act may only affect the firm’s immediate stakeholders, such as its employees, customers, and suppliers. To be socially responsible, a firm also must take actions that benefit the community at a higher level.
The goal of marketing is to affect how customers think about and behave toward the organization and its market offerings. However, to affect the whats, whens, and hows of buying behavior, marketers must first understand the whys.

Setting the Stage for a Purpose
Hospital goals provide hospital administration a target to strive and attain. The goals of healthcare organizations may include delivering high quality patient care, creating excellent workplace for the employees, supporting physicians, providing community values, and ensuring fiscal responsibility. Health care organizations become successful when they create value for their patients, physicians, and other stakeholders that rely on their service. Heath care organizations have numerous opportunities to create value for patients. The organizational goals are effective means of illustration on how and where value can be created. Along with the vision and mission statements, goals of a healthcare organization help develop objectives which are quantitative in nature as well as based on attainable goals.
The gathering of information is used to develop a vision, mission, and values to set strategy of the organization that fosters strategic thinking throughout the organization. The vision, mission, values, and strategic goals are appropriately called directional strategies because they guide healthcare executives at the time of making key organizational decisions. This is critical in the overall purpose of strategy deployment. Strategic thinking provides the organization a focused direction as well as aligning the strategy throughout the organization. Establishing a solid foundation vision, mission, and value requires reflection of key questions.
Vision: Where are we going? Mission: Why do we exist? Or What do we do? Values: How will we behave while performing the Mission in achieving the Vision? The vision statement sets the cultural direction in the organization. The vision must be relevant to the present and to the future of the organization. The mission reflects the purpose of the organization, and the mission statement notes the action of the organization. It may be to create healthy communities or deliver high quality health care. Values are the guiding principles of organizational action, and they may relate to terms based on rules of conduct such as compassion, trustworthiness, or respect.
